I am the Director of a Vacation Bible School/ Fundraiser at my church and we are doing a Bethlhem meets North Pole theme. I need some cheep and easy decorations for a Bethlehem Marketplace and a North Pole. Any Ideas??? I have basically no money to spend on this, do have TONS of styrofoam!!!!

I also would like some ideas for lighting our fundraiser without using conventional theatre lighting. I know this is way out there. Any Ideas???

Thanks,
Matt

styrofoam = igloo blocks annnnnd the rough brick that Bethlehem was build out of. Some blue/silver spray paint makes great looking ice peices and some brown or clay colored can make the brickes used to build up a marketplace. Have each of your actors bring in some type of small prop for a market place, and go to a local grocerie store and pick up their leftover boxes (or any big applience place) for cardboard to make the stalls and backdrops for the market. use the bricks to build up the seller's carts and stalls and have your actors bring in props to fill them fake fruits and veggies, anything that they can find in their attic that *might* fit the time period that they dont need!

just a note...
if you plan on painting the styrofoam, you'll need to undercoat it by hand first. Spray paint tends to "Melt" it.  Other wise I'd use pretty much a similar plan.

As for lighting, try white holiday lights.  Surprisingly, they give off lots of light and you can usually find them at yard sales this time of the year.

If you need to "spot" any part, try using using outdoor lights- flood or spot. The same you see on houses for security. Use a regular wall switch with a box to turn it on and off. An extension cord will work for wire. Just make sure to not overload the outlet/circuit.
