How do you find a community theater or one of it’s close relatives? I mean if there is someone who decides that they really want to be on stage and everybody says take acting class and do community theater how do you find a theater that will take you with no experience?
More specific to me. how do i find those theaters in the South bay area of Southern California? |

Rebekah -
Thanks for asking. Here's what I just did to get you started. The American Association of Community Theatres (AACT) is a national organization serving community theatre throughout the country. Certainly, not every single community theatre in the country has a relationship with AACT, but there is enough information and contacts on their website that can get you started. Here are a couple of links I found on the AACT website that might be helpful to you: This is a listing of member organizations in Region VIII of AACT, which includes California. There are a number of community theatres listed in CA and maybe one of them is near you - or near enough to you to contact and see if anyone there knows of any others closer to you: http://www.aact.org/PublicSearchPro.html The AACT site also has a list of state contacts and this is the listing for California:
For more info on AACT, go to www.aact.org You might also contact the California State Arts Council or an equivalent organization. Keep us posted if you find out about anything! And, as we say, break a leg! |

Our CT actually posts open auditions in the local newspaper the week before they are to occur.

When you say South Bay, are you near Chula Vista?
I am the Artistic Director at OnStage Playhouse in downtown Chula Vista - check us out, we'd love to have you get involved: www.onstageplayhouse.org. There are also several theatres in and around the South Bay.
Feel free to email me with any questions!

Try contacting the local Chamber of Commerce, the should have a list of theater groups and contact information. Though waiting for audtion notices to come out in the paper are good ideas, some shows may currently be in production and they may need someone who is willing to work their way up in the company. It could be as simple as being an usher for shows to many different aspects of production. Not only will you be learning something by being aggressive to seek them out, but it will help them know who you are when it comes time to casting a show. Makes it a lot easier for a director to cast someone they know that is responsible then it is to cast someone they never meet and hope they show up for rehearsals.

The two greatest days in a theater persons life, the day you start a new show and the day the damn thing closes.
