bullet Topic: help hanging flats w/out support
    Posted: 3/05/07 at 9:54pm
I am building a set for Enchanted April, and Act I is designed to go in front of the traveler, then struck quickly during intermission with Act II behind.

So, Act I calls for simple set- 2 4x10' flats fastened together into an 8x10', backed up right against the curtain, with no room for supports.  It is on the center line, so something may be able to go through the curtains.  We are in a rented space and cannot secure to the floor....

Also, it needs to be plumb becuase there will be projections on it as well...

Any help is greatly appreciated!

Feet. There are several ways to do it, but basically put feet on it. Depending on the framework of your flats you could attach flat wood to the bottom of the flat or use feet that give it the appearance of a free standing chalk board.
What is your framework like for your flats?

With the truck book two jogger [1’ or 2’] flats on each end of the 8’ x 10’, the booked flats will act as braces. Attach the flats to the plynth of the truck on three sides, with the truck set inside  of the flats.
You can paint the downstage edge of the booked flats or cut a ply profile attached to the DS edge &  over hang the truck slightly. Depending on the sight lines &/or cover the back of the booked flats on each side with black tat.

no fly room...

Thanks for the notes- and now its changed a bit-- they want to project images from the rear (different windows to depict different homes, etc).

I am thinking we will be attaching to the set behind the curtain upstage-- aobut 2 feet away with a cutout for projection on fabric.

Any ideas on the type of fabric that would work best for rear projection?

A Truck may or may not work, as we dont have much space to stash it when it goes off, and doorways are short... We have the 2 flats hinged at the moment to make it easier to move.
