bullet Topic: Favorite roles
    Posted: 10/17/06 at 12:45pm

Maybe this has been done in the past, but I haven't seen it.  Please forgive if it's already been posted.

I thought it might be fun to ask the Board members what their favorite roles have been.  I know we all might be able to go on and on listing roles, but let's limit them to the 5 top favorites.

Also, directors:  what are your top 5 favorite plays that you've directed?  The most fun, the most meaningful to you, the best, etc.

And yet a third list:  what role or show have you done more than once?

To show that I'm not all talk and no action, here are my contributions:

Acting:

Bella in "Lost in Yonkers"

Amnesia in "Nunsense"

Amanda Prynne in "Private Lives" (you think I'M a diva!)

Sara Goode in "The Sister's Rosensweig"

Charlotte Hay in "Moon over Buffalo" (another diva!)

Vera Charles in "Auntie Mame" (yet another diva....ok, so I come by my user name honestly.  I guess Marty was right. You don't hear me say that too often!)

OK, so I broke my first rule and listed 6.  Couldn't choose between them. So feel free to list 5 or 6.

Directing:

"Assassins" (sorry, Marty)

"Agnes of God"

"A Shayna Madel" (by far my top favorite and the most meaningful one I've done)

"Twelve Angry Men"

"Early One Evening at the Rainbow Bar and Grill"

Done more than once:

Veta Louise in "Harvey" (2 times)

Abby Brewster in "Arsenic and Old Lace" (2)

Florence Unger in "Odd Couple, female" (2)

"Nunsense" (Reverand Mother, Amnesia)

"Something's Afoot" (Miss Tweed, Hope)

"Working" (various roles)

Hope others think this will be fun, too!  Looking forward to your posts.

Hey now let the techies play too:

Top 5 fave shows as SM:

5 1776, had a great time 26 guys in the cast who love me. what could be better?

4 Nunsense, Those nuns crack me up

3 Tis Pity Shes a Whore, Great title

2 Noises Off, so much fur I almost wet myself...

And # The Rocky Horror Show, Had the best cast and the show rocked for 35 preformances...

Now most fun I ever had on Stage: I once played all the dead bodies in Arsnic and Old Lace. I think I still have brusies from that one

Sorry, Shatcher....had no intention of discriminating against techies!  Just had my mind in the actor/director mode. Enjoyed your choices....and that's one of the reasons I liked "Twelve Angry Men"....all that testosterone on stage and me the only female!

And tristanrobin.....wow!  Another person in the world who loves "Assassins"!  (See, Marty, it's not just my warped sense of theatrical judgement....there are people out there that LOVE the show.)  Seriously, though, isn't it the neatest show, and isn't the music great?  The first time I listened to the cast recording, I spent the whole time wondering "where is Oswald?"  And then, the moment that he entered the show.....BOOM!  Like a bomb going off in my head!  Saving him for the end was brilliant!

I only have two so far I would categorize as favorites.

Roz in "Moon Over Buffalo" and Sister Rita in "The Runner Stumbles". Completely different but both have great "actress-appeal"

Red diva,

I also love Assassians I have not had the chance to do that one yet. I don't really go for the typical musical faves of all time Sweeney Todd, Little Shop(did that one 3 times forgot to add that), Assiassins and sunday in the park with george

No worries we techies are used it I just like to play along with everyone! What a fun post whos next?

Holy Cow this would be hard to select only 5.  I have so many I've loved doing but if I had to choose 5 (and if I can indulge the 6th) they would have to be as follows:

  1. TEVYE - in Fiddler (the TOP all-time fave)
  2. TITO MERRELLI - in Lend Me A Tenor
  3. CHARLEMAGNE - in Pippin
  4. ARTIE - in House Of Blue Leaves
  5. ARCHIE CRAVEN - in The Secret Garden
  6. GEORGE HAY - Moon Over Buffalo

As for directing - it would have to be

  1. BUS STOP
  2. 84 CHARING CROSS ROAD
  3. ON GOLDEN POND
  4. SLOW DANCE ON THE KILLING GROUND
  5. NUNSENSE I & II

Multiple involvements have been with the following:

  1. Nunsense I - Directed I three times, II twice
  2. Bus Stop - Directed twice
  3. Pippin - was IN the second, consulted as magician on first and second and music directed the second time too
  4. You're A Good Man, Chas. Brown - directed both times
  5. On Golden Pond - directed both times

So many shows so little time.  I've been doing multiple jobs in most of the shows I've been involved with - as I'm sure many of you have as well.  I have directed, designed sets, sound, costumes and run sound, lights and built or helped build most of the sets I've worked on, in or around.  It just never stops.  ALTHOUGH in the last 6 months I've done nothing - and you know what?? I don't miss it much at all.  NEEDED the break.  Doing two or three things at the same time is too much for THIS old phart - need to slow down and enjoy doing what I want, when I want and IF I want.  And if I don't do anymore well being involved in nearly 90 productions in the last 18 years is enough.  Do the math.  90/18= 5 roughly more or less.  Some years more, some less but average.  Too dang much.  Time to have a life apart doing other creative things I've not had the chance to pursue but wanted to.
