bullet Topic: WHAT TO CHARGE
    Posted: 8/22/06 at 12:45pm

Good Day to All,

I have been asked to direct a community theater event for pay, and am not sure what to charge.  I have directed numerous shows before, but always as a volunteer. Does anyone have any advice on what to charge?  Any and all advice would be greatly appreciated.  I am looking at directing Broadway Junior production, and am looking at 12 weeks to put it together, with a run of two, possibly three weekends for six shows total.

I learned many good lessons at my father's knee, but few were as important as being told, "The worst they can say is "No"".

Do you want to receive $100?  $200?  More?  Do you know anyone else in the area who has been paid to direct?  If you do, ask them what the going rate is.  Not even knowing what area of the country you live in, I can't begin to give you any idea of "prevailing wage" or the "going rate".  If you can't get any info locally your best bet is to decide what you feel is reasonable and double it.  Remember "The worst they can say is "No"".  Don't worry, if your number is too high, they'll make a counter offer and you take it from there.  Judging from other posts I've read here in the Green Room, community theater directors are getting anywhere from nothing up to $500 or so to direct a non-musical.

Have fun with your show!  (usually more important then the dough, anyway)

Thanks for the advice, and indeed it is more important for me to do a good quality show. I feel honored that they want to pay me as I would have done it for nothing.  I am new to the are (Hampton, VA) and am just wanting to build a name for myself. I was looking to see what is considered "reasonable" but I do agree with "all they can say is no"... I did some further searching on the web today, and got some good "medians".  I am glad that I found this message board today...lots of good advice here.
