Topic: need to have black roots Posted: 5/05/06 at 11:37pm |
I am in a show that requires my character to have black roots. It has to be something that can be washed out at the end of each show. Any ideas? Thanks. |

I think that I would try mascara. It would come out with eye makeup remover don't you think?

That was my first choice. I had a tough time getting it out. Just wondering if there was anything else. But, thank you! |

There is always Burnt cork!
Which was used by the Music Hall Minstrel performers, like Al Jolson! From what I remember just light a candle & burn the end of the cork by rolling it in your fingers over the flame & apply the burnt sooted end to the roots. The cork is not hot at all, rub the soot in with the cork & it will also colour up the scalp as well! You can just wash to remove it, even on the face it required either a light application of make up remover like liquid paraffin or cold cream, but I found soap & water better. It requires more than just sweat or water to remove, I have even been outside of the theatre in the rain & it does not streak with a wet face. It might be difficult to just colour up the roots with the burnt cork though, without getting it on the rest of the hair? I never needed to try it on the hair but it just a thought! |

Well, if you're brave you might try this: A temporary rinse that washes out. But since you want it only on the roots, you probably would have to apply an oily product to the rest of the hair first so you have a "resist" effect. I really think I'd stick to mascara, but try various ones out because they do vary greatly from one brand to another and from one formulation to another. There are some that are a kind of water base which it seems would wash out better. Mary Kay Cosmetics used to make one that was called "Flawless mascara" and it was not a heavy, oily mascara nor was it waterproof. That's the one I'd try if you can find it.

How about using dark (appropriate to your hair color) creme shadow applied with a small piece of stipple sponge and/or a 1/4" angled brush? Similar in concept to using white creme makeup for grey hair. It should wash out fairly easily too, but I would test that first. -- Tom |

Have you tried the colored hairspray available at beauty suppliers? You would have to cover hair you don't want black, but it does wash out right away. It's about $5 a can, and they last about 2 performances each.

I just want to say thanks to everyone for their time. You all gave great ideas! I'm going to experiment with a few and report back as to which worked the best. |

Ben Nye makes a liquid hair coloring that comes in a variety of shades. The bottle contains its own tiny applicator brush. I've used both silver and white. They are very quick to apply and brush in quite convincingly. Both wash out very easily with shampoo (most -- but not all -- of the coloring can be removed with plain water). I've never tried the black shade, though. Here's a link to a website where you can read more about the product and purchase it online: |
