bullet Topic: Please Help! Grease Auditions
    Posted: 10/14/05 at 4:44pm
Hello, any help would be GREATLY apreciated! I am auditioning for Grease this weekend at my local theater, but I am unsure of what kind of song I should choose for auditions. I am extremely classically trained, but I have close to no experience in pop. Should I choose a more classical broadway piece, such as something from Phantom of the Opera or Cats, or would the director prefer someone to audition with music from the show? Please Help. Desperate! lol.

It depends on which role you're going after. Many years ago, I played Rizzo. Knowing that everyone else interested would do a standard Broadway song, I chose instead to sing Del Shannon's Runaway, and I got the part.  DO NOT audition with a song from the show.  Since the music in Grease is pretty upbeat, I would go with an uptemo song.  Good luck.

Agreed. While any song of course can work for an audition, (except a song from the actual show), I think you are well advised to do something upbeat. Something that if you were listening to, you would probably find yourself tapping your foot to. If you are allowed, something from the 50's even.

I know that I am a guy, but for what it is worth, I was in that show once. My audition piece was "Bye Bye Love". They asked that it be a 1950's sort of song at the particular theatre I tried out for, but if you have more leeway than that, any toe-tapper as I said, would be of benefit.
