Topic: magic for Cinderella Posted: 7/30/05 at 9:00pm |
Hi, We are doing Cinderella in 2006. There is some magic that happens. We need to have flowers magicially appear in a vase on the table. The vase will already be there, but no one will be near the table. I realize the obvious would be long table cloth with a whole in the table and someone under the table, but I would like it to appear to be more magicial with the legs of the table showing. Does anyone have any thoughts on what I might do. Also the broom handle is supposed to light up by itself. Thanks for any help! |

Hi, I directed Cinderella in 1996 , so my memory is a little hazy. I did have a local magician come to work with the fairy godmother. He took care of all the slight of hand stuff we needed. We didn't have flowers appear in a vase. We did an out of thin air into the vase. I believe we traded his time for ad space. We did get the broom to glow. At the time there was an article in Stage Directions Magazine about how to make wizard's wand glow. I used that idea. I can't find the article with the step by step directions. It was a while ago. Here is what I do remember. We adapted the broom with a clear tube and a flashlight at the head of the handle. We did have some trouble with finding the right flashlight so it would fit in the tube and still be able to turn on. We had to do some camouflage, but it worked really well in the end. I hope this helps. Linda

Ringbo, where are you located? If you know any magicians, they might have a standard item that would fit your request exactly. If not, is there a magic shop in your area? Ask them for a referral to someone who could be your "magic advisor." If neither of those helps, PM me and let me know how much you can spend on this effect, and I'll help you order or make something that will work. (Sorry to be so "hinty", but magicians have a code to uphold, you know!) |

When we did Cinderella we put the table up against a wall of the set, drilled a hole through the bottom of the vase that was hot glued to the top of the table and through the table so that the fake flowers would be down inside the vase and the stems below the table(which were hidden by a table cloth but the table legs were still visible). We drilled a small hole in the flat behind the table and had a fish line (we used the black braided line because it stretched the least)that went through the flat and through a small screw eye on the bottom of the table and down to a board that was hinged to the bottom of the table (the stems from the flower sat on the end of the hinged board which was directly below the opening) When the stagehand behind the flat pulled on the fishline the board came up and pushed the flowers up in the vase. We had to reset each night but it worked
