   That is actually a very good point to mention. Double ended lamps do not do well with the lamp vertical. I could see situations where you might want to wash a cyc from the side, but it would be a bad idea with this type of fixture. 

I've often wondered how cyc lights would fare as full-stage color washes, but you wouldn't want to use them sideways in that application either. I suspect that there would be issues around spill control though. 

I've heard of using striplights from the side but the lamps we have in ours are pretty weak and didn't do much. We have those phony PARs that are really R-40s. To make things worse they are lamps designed for a slightly higher voltage making them pretty dim. What are people using in strips these days? Back in the day, we used 300 watt R40s, or 150-250 watt PAR-38s but they are getting harder to find.

	with the linear lamps the problem is the spring type filliment collapses on it's self, caused by the running temperature within the bubble, unlike the incandescent lamps. We use the old Strand S battens occasionally as side light mounted on their ends;-http://www.strandarchive.co.uk/lanterns/sbatten.html as well as using them as X ray borders, cyc, groundrow or 'Z' Floatlights [footlight] . I remember years ago at a production meeting with a Ballet Company & their LD expounding the virtue of his innovative dea. Using border battens as the on stage 4 colour wash, after he waffled on how it freed up other fresnel lanterns & cut down on the focusing time. He became rather upset after I mentioned that this how it was done prior to the 60's & the advent of rock 'n roll. Using cyclights as boarder colour wash lighting could be achieved by jist softening the edge of the beam by utilising the frame sharkstooth masking scallops to meld in with the wash.
