Topic: Violet Beauregard from Willy Wonka Posted: 9/29/08 at 11:03pm |
Hi. Looking for a costume for the Willy Wonka Junior production being done by Merrimack Junior Theater in Andover, Mass. on Friday, Sat and Sunday, November 14,15 and 16, 2008. We are looking specifically for the "sumo suit" being mentioned on this web site for the character Violet Beauregard. What is the cost for renting the costume? How do I go about renting it?

With halloween coming up that should be an easy aquisition! Renting/Buying...its a fairly inexpensive item to own.

We just completed this show...it was great. We used an inflatable pumpkin costume as a pattern and made our own blueberry out of taffata fabric. We reused the fan, zipper etc from the pumpkin. We then put violet in a dress with a zipper up the back that was unzipped by oompa loompas at the appropriated time!!

I'm willing to rent out our blueberry costume. We will be completing our last weekend of production this weekend, so I can probably get it in the mail by Oct. 29. This costume has gotten a great response from the audience. Violet waltzes behind the Gob-stopper set while singing, "I'll bet it's to die for." When it's Violet's turn to sing, a body double comes out with this costume on and finishes the song. We double casted the part, so the girls take turns being the principle Violet and the blueberry. If you are interested, let me know!

Okay, just copy and paste the link into your navigation tool bar, and then go to the link. It doesn't work to just click on the link in the message.
BTW, these pictures were taken during one of the dress rehearsals and the sets weren't completed at that point. Here's an additional link to professional quality photos taken by one of our parents during the actual show (and the sets were completed!): http://sorensen.smugmug.com/gallery/6362739_DHuHs//40206 |

I don't understand -- how did the audience not notice it was a new person? Was her face all blue and did this help?

Yes, her face was colored blue, and we put a purple wig on her. The girls were about the same height. I think people know it's really not the same person, but I heard a few kids (sixish) discussing how Violet got so big so fast. There was a gasp and laughter when she waddled back on stage and burst through the line of the other ticket winners.
The series of gags really set the audience up--most everyone knows how the story goes. We were able to have Augustus fall through a trap door into the orchestra pit below (lots of padding to land on!) then Violet appears big and round and blue and gets rolled off the stage by the Oompas, then Veruca gets pushed down a slide by the squirrels into the same trap door, then we finally get to Mike TeeVee: He flips a giant switch, there's a quick strobe flash, then everything is dark. When the lights come up he's gone. On the opposite side of the stage, after all the lines and a little musical cue, we had a 3 year-old boy run out from a mock tv. He was dressed exactly like the big Mike, and he ran around the stage while Ms TeeVee chased him. The audience just howled. It was such a delight to see their reactions to our gags. I'll try to post a Violet picture and a Blueberry Violet picture on Facebook. I'll post the url when I get that done. Have fun with your show! |

Okay, here's a link to my Violet/Blueberry photos. Sorry I have more of Maren than Abigail, but that's because Maren is my daughter!
Don't try to click on the link, even if it's highlighted--for some reason that doesn't work. Instead, copy it, then paste it into your address bar. http://www.facebook.com/album.php?aid=40606&l=58a9f&id=597429037 |

For my school's production, we used a blueberry suit that had velcro on it. To have her face turned blue, we had a blue spotlight, and during that scene we shined it on her face.
