Topic: Need a clear space helmet... Posted: 9/12/07 at 4:15pm |
Hello, I am working on this year's halloween costume and would like to make or adapt something to be a clear acrylic space helment. Simplicity patterns has an alien child's pattern with such a 12" helmet. Most anything I can find in the pet stores is a 13" mega excersize ball that you would put a hamster in... still a little small for an adult. Any other suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Lynn I just had a thought, which is not adressing your problem.
With acrylic might it not be a safety issue, being a hard plastic, in as much as it tends to splinter! |

Try a lighting fixture store......they do make fixtures that are not glass.....the only problem would be to get the neck hole big enough.
Maybe make a frame for the helmet and cover it with the clear shrink wrap plastic that people put over their windows in the winter.
Spray paint an old style football or motorcycle helmet ( without the mouth guard) and it may look enough like a space helmet with a little tweeking.

Well i have had my bath, contenplated both big toes & didn't think of anything as good as your suggestions Joan!
Heres me a Sparky & I never thought of Polycarbinate light fittings They are faily easy to work, drll & cut. To make the hole larger for the head & chin, also to put in cross flow air vents & mouth appatures. further tart it up with flexable vacum cleeaner hoses & space like attachments. Also a heat gun can be used carefully to smooth off the cuts & even shape to a certain extent. Bewdy Joan! {Tristanrobins 'Beer Ball' sounds interesting?} |

Try this, if you have time.
Inflate a kid's party balloon to just the right size.
Mix up a solution of epoxy resin in a big deep bowl.
Dip the ballon in it, or smear the balloon with it. Let it set. Cut neck hole to fit.
Probably won't work, but if you get really desperate...

G'day Kurt
As this works much the same, as the inflating of a plastic membrane, to form concrete fora dome structure. Which is a great idea Kurt! How would it be if the baloon was inflated to under the size required. Then after the dipping & spreading proess, it was inflated to the full size? With a compressed & air nozzle. The size could be aproximated visualy by either shinning a light & using the shadow to fit a marked off drawing on the wall or via measuring. Would this give a smoother even finish to the resin or create too much thinging for the it? |
