Topic: Beauty and the Beast Rose Domes Posted: 7/05/07 at 3:25pm |
We ran Beauty and the Beast in January through March of 2007, and created our costumes and the props (i.e. rose and mirror) from scratch. Instead of petals falling off the rose, we had it lighted up, so that as the rose "died", the light went down in increments.
It is so specific to the show, that we will never be able to use it again. If anyone needs to find a rose for an upcoming performance, we will sell it for the cost of making it, plus shipping costs. We actually have two (we made a spare just in case) available. It stands about two feet high with the glass dome on top.
The rose dome includes:
-Base (looks like stone, sits flat on table or surface)
-Dimmer (light switch dimmer that controls the light levels)
-Rose (silk stem rose, wrapped on base of stem to hold rose upright)
-Dome (HEAVY-duty glass bell dome-fits into the base for extra stability)

I would be interested in one of your roses if still available. Do you have any other costumes that you would be willing to rent?

Do you still have either of the rose dome props left? If so, my school is doing BATB and I'd prefer to not build one.
Thanks!

I was surprised at the good response I got from people who saw the rose petals fall in my rose dome. After the show they said, "hey, was it my imagination, or did that rose magically lose its petals?!"
It was a very simple effect. Usually it's the simplest theatre tricks that get the best response! All I did was hotglue some thin fishing line to a few loose petals, and at the proper moments someone would tug the lines. Simple and foolproof.
Here is a photo of my rose dome. I borrowed the glass dome from a local flower shop. The iron pedestal is an antique plant stand. Then I rigged two pin-spots to shoot up through the glass to make the rose glow. You can see some of the rose petals here...but the fishing line is invisible, even at this close distance:
My wife was under the Beast's platform with a tiny video monitor, so whenever she saw the Beast reach toward the dome, she would yank another petal off...and you could hear a couple people in the audience gasp:
A simple, low-tech trick that had people buzzing in the lobby!
Good luck, Dana

We made our Beauty & the Beast rose dome much the way Mr. Lowell did - big glass dome (boy was THAT hard to find), rose petals attached to little self-stick magnets to hold them on and monofilament fishline running down through a gold plant stand and below through the platform. We also cemented a vase to the plant stand to hold the rose, and had two roses to drop petals - one with three droppers and the final one with one. The glass dome actually looks exactly like the one in the Disney movie, right down to the molded glass knob on top.
We made a matching plant stand and vase for the initial, complete rose in the prologue. the audience effect was great when the petals fell. It's simple but neat, but we'll never need it again after closing night.
Our closing night is April 26, and if anyone near Milwaukee needs the dome set (two stands & vases, dome, three roses) for their production of BATB after that, send me an email @ mvp1114@ameritech.net.
