Topic: Funny Musical for High School Posted: 10/19/05 at 9:52pm |
We're looking for a funny musical to do for our High School Spring
production. We have a very strong female lead. It's a high school
in a conservative town, so nothing too crazy. You're a Good Man,
Charlie Brown was a big hit last year (our strong female lead was a
spot on hilarious Lucy)
Thanks! |

Although I have a bit of a personal grudge against it (I was in the straight play on which it's based, and my wonderful character was excised when it was converted to a musical... grrr....), Hello Dolly is on the lighter side, and has a very strong and charismatic female lead. |

Some suggestions for great, funny musicals with a
strong female lead: "Once Upon a Mattress" "Sweet Charity" "Wonderful Town" |

"Ruthless"
"Zombie Prom" "Weird Romance" ...all outrageously funny with very good strong female leads |

How about Little Me? or Arsenic and Old Lace? Or how about Bus Stop? or maybe even Enchanted April.... |

oops! You did say musical. I got a little beside myself....
Bye Bye Birdie has a strong female lead, as does The Pajama Game. You could also try Music Man, or Carousel, or King and I (not too funny, but strong female lead)... Or how about Crazy for You? |

We just completed "Anne of Green Gables" - very demanding female role, not only vocally but acting ability. I know there is more than one version out there - ours was the Canadian Don Harron version. Great story - needs a strong lead to carry it.

I have had good success with the following shows with a
high school drama program in years that I have had strong female leads and was looking for comedy: Rodgers and Hammerstein's Cinderella The Boy Friend Anything Goes Hello Dolly Good luck in your search. |

I know your play is done, but for those who might be drawn here by your post, we just closed HONK! at our high school.. The kids and the audince loved it! If you haven't seen it, don't dismiss it. Not only does it play to the younger members of the audince as a rendition of the tale of the Ugly Duckling, but it is also full of humor, some of it of a little higher plain.. that the young kids don't get, and keeps the adults interested...
