bullet Topic: women & children abound men not so much

We need ideas for shows that are light on male roles.  We have an ample supply of cast members but only a few good men.  None of them are will do a leading role.  We have a pre-teen boy and a teenage girl who are both capable of leading roles.  Most of our females are aged 30 and up.  We like comedy.  Our motto:  The show must go on! (If we can cast something)

When you find that play, let me know.  It seems that many Community Theaters are light on the menfolk.  Funny thing is we have no problem casting our musicals because all of the guys are looking for good looking gals it's our straight show that is always light on male talent.

Look at the musical version of "Anne of Green Gables" (the Samuel French Version).  It only need three or four men and maybe three of for boys.  Most of the major roles for for girls and Women.  The music is quite good, and it is basically a good American Book Musical (made in Canada).

Check out the replys to the topic "Please Help" under  Play Suggestions. He was looking for all female shows...but there were some very good, interesting shows listed that might work for your group.

Good Luck,

How about an adaptation, or indeed abridgement, of Aristophane's "Lysistrata"? It's an ancient Greek comedy, fairly dirty humour, and very female dominated...

Look at:  Crimes of the Heart, The Cemetery Club, female version of The Odd Couple, Twelve Angry Women, I Never Saw Another Butterfly, Little Miss Fresno (one act), The Taffeta's (musical), Talking With, Trojan Women, Love Letters (1M, 1W), Proof (2M, 2W), Over the River and Through the Woods (3M,3W), Jake's Women, Tribute (many of the roles can be cast as women) and my favorite: Three Viewings (1M, 2W).

You might try a musical called "Romeo Loves Juliet" which has been done
all over the world to good reviews (US, England, Canada, Australia, New
Zealand, Botswana, Saudi Arabia, etc,) and has a lot of good female roles.
The only biggish male role is Romeo.
8F, 4M,
-With a variant versions for larger cast needs? (12F, 7M, 6Either)

Here are a couple of good ones

Steel Magnolias - awesome show, good name recognition, single set, 6 women, 0 men -

Little known but hilariously funny, Girls of the Garden Club by John Patrick (also wrote The Curious Savage).  This show has a very flexible, extremely heavy female cast.  2 men - one husband 40-60 (no lines but great expressions - strike that - one line BTTHTHTHTH (raspberry)).  The other male is a teenage boy.  Main cast has 6 women (of almost any age range), one older woman (who has the damn best lines in the whole play) and 1 teenage girl.  The "garden club" lines can be divided among the cast or given to others as small roles.  When I directed it a couple of years ago, I had REAL WOMEN (not actresses) from the local garden clubs. They had 1-5 lines each with minimal rehearsals. They had a BLAST and we sold out every performance. WARNING! As the director learns the script, there are some serious printing errors - some lines for one character were given to another.  I am very happy to help anyone define those lines.  Great show - VERY FUNNY, single one-story set. Premise: Rhoda's life revolves around her daughter and the garden club. She want's more than anything to be president, but every year evil Lillybelle Lamont is chosen because she is rich and throws the best parties - doesn't matter that she doesn't know anything about gardening.  Rhoda has a plan. She has some rare bulbs called the Sleeping Virgin lily and hopes to convince (with some help from her friends) to change the rules as to how the garden club president gets elected to whomever wins the garden show (shh the bulbs are her secret weapon).  BUT before she can make the suggestion, Lillybelle makes it and she has the SAME BULBS!  I won't give away more, but this play is an "All in the Family meets Little Shop of Horrors" flavor and will delight audiences. Please let me know if you do it!
