Topic: How to Build a Theater Posted: 7/13/06 at 1:40pm |
I'm interested in building a small theater (100-150 seats). I'm still deciding what type (black box or otherwise)... any suggestions on books or websites that might offer step by step instruction?

I would start by visint other theatres, you will find many good ideas to borrow. there are many firms that design theatres I'm sure you could find someone in your area to help out.

Are you hoping to build from scratch? Or are you looking to convert an existing space? If the latter, there is a great book called "Will it Make A Theater?" It is all about converting spaces and covers everything from architectural choices to Building Codes to historic landmark concerns, you name it! Don't know the author, but I'm sure you can get it on Amazon. Good luck!

I think checking out other local theatres is a great idea. Another suggestion would be to ask the current users (and I'm not talking the owners--I mean the actors, stage managers, crew, house managers, etc.) what they would change about their theatre if they had the chance to and why.
