At the end off our season we generally have between 4 and 8 grand in the bank to start our next year on. We have a three show seaon that includes a musical, a senior citizens dinner theater, and a ballet. Is this normal for a community theater in a town of about 6000 people to do this well? We get grants for Exxon, and the Illinois Arts council. We also send out a spring fund raising letter that genearlly brings in about 6 thousand. Our annual budget hovers around 30 grand.

I can't really answer as we are just starting our first season, but was happy to find someone in a similar setting as we are....a rural town of about 6,000 people. I'd love to learn more about your group. Our theater group, Actitude, is currently opreating out of our performing arts studio but we are considering making it a non-profit separate organization. Any words of wisdom would be greatly appreciated.

That sounds pretty darn good for a rural town of 6000. We are in a similar situation. We do 5 shows a year and barely break even given our expenses. We always make money on the well known musicals, but we consider ourselves lucky if we see a profit on the straight stage shows. We gave up dinner theatres a couple of years ago because we just couldn't make any money with them. We still do an occasion "unknown" show, because there are some good ones out there, but we don't make any profit because the people just don't come out to see them. We've also done the spring fundraising letter and campaign. I think we spent more on printing and postage than we made on it. Our budgets seem to be about the same as yours. You must be doing something right! I'd like to pick your brain! |

The only time we feel flush, is when they press the button &
our grant applications, is flushed down the dunny [toilet]!
Could it be because you have a ballet season? Here they throw lorry loads of gold at ballet, opera & symphony orchestras. But amateur theatre never gets a sniff of the dregs in the arts/culture trough. You must be doing something right! |
