bullet Topic: Have you done "Lettice and Lovage"?
    Posted: 10/23/06 at 4:21pm

Our playreading committee is looking at "Lettice and Lovage" as a possibility for our 2007-2008 season.  I was wondering if anyone on the Board had been involved in its production at their theatre, and how it went over with an American audience?

I really love the script and my personal preference would be to recommend it....but I wondered if it was too "veddy, veddy" British for your average US audience. I'm afraid that too many people would miss many of the very funny Brit references and illusions, but I thought that maybe they would enjoy it on a totally different level.  There IS much to laugh at and appreciate that isn't exclusively British.

Anyway, I would really like to hear from any of you that were in it, directed it, teched it, saw it......Would it go over in a small city American theatre?

I have not done it, but I saw it last year in small city. The house was packed, and the audience loved it. The set was beautiful. It was actually featured in Stage Directions magazine earlier this year, when they spotlighted theater in Maine. I am pretty sure it was August, but it might have been September. I think it would be worth doing. It has such wonderfully written roles for the women.

Same comment as LInda - I've never been involved in a production - but I've
seen the play - and it was a huge audience hit.

Ditto both of the above (seen but never done).  I'm sure I didn't get most of the Brit-specific references, but it's a terrific play anyway.

Just wanted to make this topic current, 'cuz I REEEEALLY, really need to hear your experiences with "Lettice and Lovage" before our next playreading meeting!

So far it seems to be a "thumbs up" on audience response!

Thanks for helping.

I?ve never seen or done it!
But I wouldn?t worry about the average american audience, unless your mob try & bung on a pohmy accent.
I doubt they would miss that much, as they would have done 30 odd years ago!
I think this is an old furphy since the advent of BBC America at least.
Go for it Blue!

I hope you end up doing it -- it's one of my favorite plays ever, and I am dying to produce it one of these days (once I have my own venue, hee).

You know, the climate right now might be peculiarly right as well -- look at Helen Mirren, in so many acclaimed recent projects, or the successes of so many recent and current British works featuring mature women.  Just a thought!

Good luck!
