Hi I am new to this board so I apologize in advance if this is posted in the wrong spot. The theater I am part of is putting together a musical and asked me to help out with music. They bought the panto script and added to it. I found out we would be adding all the music. We have spent a few weeks now trying to figure out what we wanted to use and after picking out 80% of the music I am starting to draw a blank. We are not using live music so everything I pick out needs to be available as instrumental track. The director wants me to find songs for the following: 1) Stepmom (who is an old opera singer) and stepdaughters (played by men) 2) Song for the King (who has a girlfriend 1/2 his age) 3) King, the prince, and the prince's sidekick (who can not sing but is girl crazy) 4) A beautician in a Bueaty Parol must be funny and a song for a girl who thinks she lost her chance (serious) 5) If you have any ideas or suggestions on songs it would be greatly appreciated. Even ideas of songs that we could change words of would be great. Thank you in advance for the help |

I don't have any specific recommendations for music, but I just wanted to post with a word of caution, I appoligize if you are already aware of this... Be sure to understand that if you are adding music to a show you will need to get performance rights for that music unless it's old enough to be in the public domain. You can find more information on this here: http://lecatr.people.wm.edu/copy.htm#COPYRIGHT%20FOR%20SOUND Dan |

What a great reference for performance related copyright issues! Now when the subject rears it's ugly head I don't have to go on a rant, just say click here! Thanks!! |

It is a bit difficult not knowing the script, but assuming it follows some of the traditional panto characters.
Stepmom - Panto Dame [male] King - Either the villain or bumbling Baron Hardup type Prince [female] - principal boy Princes sidekick - Buttons Girl - Principle girl ;- Cinderella type Normally how the situation has been developed in the script will determine or suggestion the type & style of song appropriate for the show. Can you give more info? Working in the dark but here is some suggestions. 1) Stepmom (who is an old opera singer) and stepdaughters (played by men) ?Open a new window ?Mame? 2) Song for the King (who has a girlfriend 1/2 his age) Wonder what the King is doing tonight - ?Camelot? Master of the house - ?Les Mis? 3) King, the prince, and the prince's sidekick (who can not sing but is girl crazy) Bosom Buddies - ?Mame? 4) A beautician in a Beauty Parol must be funny Beauty School drop out - ?Grease? Style - ?The magic show? 5) and a song for a girl who thinks she lost her chance (serious) (What sort of chance has she has lost?) The music will be on a lot of the ?Broadway Karioke? recordings available on the net. |
