Topic: un-cast Posted: 9/19/06 at 2:34pm |
I have recently been involved with my local community theater. I had an experience last night that seemed a little unethical and I am looking for directors to share their experience. My nephew, age 16, was cast in a community theater production of The Buddy Holly story. He was to play the drummer. He had the schedule and was attending practice. The actor who was playing Buddy suddenly quit. The director auditioned another "Buddy" who said he would only take the part if he could come with his own band. Hence, my nephew was "un-cast". He was so disappointed. I am wondering if this is a common occurance. |

I have heard of big name talent doing this kind of thing but not really at the CT level. We have a guy here in town who played Buddy and now he goes all over the midwest doing his Buddy Holly show with his band. I am sorry your nephew was uncast, that is a bummer. I am sure there are others here who will have a better answer.

That is totally unacceptable! There is no excuse for dismissing an actor that is showing up for practice and doing their work. Not in a community theatre. I for one would start from scratch with a more cast appropriate script before I would bow down to some small town prima donnas "rider" demands in order to fill the script I had.

On the face of it I'd have to agree that this seems unethical at least for a ct and I'm sure professionals wouldn't be happy either but would understand that "it's business." As a director I'd be leery of actors putting provisos on their acceptance of a role beyond the normal scheduling conflicts. I don't want to entirely trash the director or his action because there may be other circumstances in play other than those given. I'm in no way suggesting in the least that moetbubbles nephew is responsible for his own un-casting. Just that the director may have felt that his options were limited. Personally I would not have agreed to the replacement actor's terms and would have continued looking. Maybe that comes from being located in an area where the talent is relatively bountifull and finding replacement actors although unpleasant and time consuming doesn't become a "hostage situation." |

This is not a common practice & it?s not what ameatre is about!
So if the director has opted to include this bods whole band, are there others that are have been dumped as well? If so collectively contact the board & seek the answer to the question of why this has transpired? As BMD has suggested, there could be other reasons & this will afford an opportunity for the director to answer directly! |

We don't necessarily have an overabundance of performers up here, but I agree with BMD. I would also be worried about the director who could be (do we use the word "blackmailed" here?) that easily. Are they that easily swayed? Will the capitulate on other issues? Have they a spine? If it were me, I'd be beside myself. Anger would not begin to describe the emotion I would be feeling. Wow! |

Are we allowed to say "that blows" here? Because, well, as far as I can see, that, how shall we say . . . blows. By the way, I have already been informed that I am the last person in the universe who still says "that blows." So there is no need to inform me of that fact. Thanks for your collective concern, though. |

I agree with the "having a spine" and "blackmailed" comments made by castMe. The best way to handle a "bully" is to stand up to him....more often than not he will crumble. This has happened to me twice. During "Assassins" we had a terrible time with music directors: one quit because she felt the cast was harrassing her (not), one had to have emergency surgery, one because he wasn't up to the Sondheim score, etc., etc. Finally with only two weeks to go we had to hire a professional conductor/pianist/vocal director from a nearby city to the tune of $1000. His one proviso was that he could "fire" anyone he felt was not up to the task. I told him that was not an option and that we would find someone else if that was not negotiable. He stayed. Another time a cast member in "Charlie Brown" told me (long after the time to list "rehearsal conflicts" had gone by) that he wouldn't be at final tech/dress rehearsal as he had tickets to "The Who" concert, and he "could do this show anytime". He went to The Who concert despite a last minute change of heart on his priorities, and we got another Schroeder, a much better one at that. Show your cojones! Down with bullies! |
