Topic: female alto audition Posted: 5/09/06 at 8:43am |

Hello, Can someone help me with a good female audition piece for an alto? Also, where can I get sheet music for an audition? Is there somewhere to buy/download it online? I play piano so it's not a problem learning a new song. I'm a good singer but not a great singer so I'm trying to avoid the 'really big' showtunes. I did some theatre in college and I'd love to just be in a chorus! Thanks for any and all help!!! |

Selecting a good female audition piece will be based on the quality of your own voice, the part you are auditioning for, and the general style of music of the play. I would suggest you start buying some soundtracks of musicals and start listening (or, better yet, go to some show!). As for sheet music, check out http://jwpepper.com, a large supplier of sheet music. |

You can buy single downloads of sheet music (1 song at a time) at www.musicnotes.com. I've used it for several songs that I didn't want to have to buy a whole book to get the song. Some of the songs even let you download a player that will give you a way to practice the song while the accompaniment is played on your computer.
The song you choose depends on your voice, as mentioned, but it also depends on the show and the part you are auditioning for. You should try to pick a song in a similar style to the show whenever possible. |

I would suggest buying a cast album as opposed to a soundtrack, soundtracks are only for movies. Cast albums are for Broadway, West End or Off-Broadway shows. |

This URL doesn't work for me. Theaterbrat, you're cute when you're pedantic . Actually, that's a pet peeve of mine too - I always want to yell at the clerks at Best Buy when I see cast albums shelved under "Soundtracks." But I fear we're losing that battle. Jaycee, is there somebody who can work with you -- a singing teacher, another singer, somebody who knows musical theatre? We never hear ourselves the way others hear us, so it would be helpful to have somebody listen to you sing and suggest music that would show your voice off to its best advantage. Even for chorus, keep in mind that you want to sing something you can ACT, also. Good luck! |

This is one of my pet peeves with singers who act like a log of wood! They don?t step out of them selves & sell the song. Especially Opera singers who become as interesting as a stale bottle of milk? Listen to the Broadway shows cast recordings of a solo piece & you will hear a certain amount of sing/speak, that emphasises the message & also by the length of thier pause! Even actors in musicals who can?t sing or hold a tune, Dame Judy Dench comes to mind, but she can flog/sell a song & hold the punters. |

Depending on your age, look into the songs that Elaine Stritch sang in Sondheim shows, like "The Ladies Who Lunch".

I saw Elaine Stritch on the BBC Parkinson show - replay. She was in London doing her one woman show "Stritch at the Caryle? & did a parody on the ?Ladies who lunch?. She received a standing ovation & on ?Parky? that is rare indeed. But again it was speak/sing & she sold it! Even at 80 odd she can still flog a song, dance & project her self in to it. Sorry POB, not meaning to be sneaky, it is just every time gaafa attempts to login he fails, so I?m giving him a rest for a while. Hoping this will eradicate that biscuit thing, that prevents him from doing his login on my PC. |
