Just wanted to share a fun thing we did with the last show I directed. It was Steel Magnolias and if you are familiar with the script you know there are lots of references to recipes and food in it. I decided I wanted to make a booklet for the playbill with all the recipes in it. One of the gals in the cast took this on as her project and made the greatest booklet. We all gave her our recipes that coincided with the ones in the script. For the ones we didn't have we found some and others we had to kind of just pretend what it might have been. The best thing of all is that we made each and every one of them and tried them all at rehearsals. We had Cuppa, cuppa, cuppa, Pecan Tassies, Red beans and Rice and all the rest. For the cast party I had a bakery make a Red Velvet armadillo cake with gray icing. It was soo fun and a nice touch to the whole theatre going experience. BTW - we did 8 sold out performances! GREAT FUN.

I tried to make Cuppa Cuppa Cuppa and can attest to its unpalatability! But we did a similar thing to promote the show when we did it. Our hometown newspaper has a cook of the week column. One week the cast of Steel Magnolias was the Cook of the Week -- we found southern recipes out of the White Trash cookbook (I mean it -- try it, it's good!) and submitted them with our character's and actress' names. |

Yeah, the first time we made Cuppa Cuppa Cuppa it was pretty awful. Then someone found another recipe where it said to use self rising flour and for some reason that made a big difference. Still pretty yucky tho!

Well, see, you have to a show with lots of gals in it. Everytime I've done all female cast shows we've eaten like kings...well... Queens actually! LOL!

My .02 here.
Just directed 'ART' by French playwright Yasmina Reza. Great show, 3 out of 4 shows sold out, thank you very much. The small cast (3 males with invited sig others) were expecting a cast party of chips and soda. However in keeping with the French-ness of the play and writer, my wife made quiches (one veggie for one of the sigs), we had stinky French cheese, hot French bread, French wine - you get the idea. Made it all come together so nicely. We sat for hours yakking and indulging. Almost more of a hit than the show! Always a great thing when you can tie it into the show. Just glad they don't eat cuppa cuppa cuppa in France. |

There are no small roles, only roles with a low line-load and minimal stage time.

Our little town's only church cooks dinner twice during the run of each of our productions (there are no restaurants in our town, yet!) and ladies always research the play to come up with a menu that somehow reflects the play or its setting. The do a great job and always serve a good crowd and make money. |
