bullet Topic: We Open Tomorrow!
    Posted: 4/12/06 at 10:24am

No question here, just bragging slightly and trolling for good-wishes type messages.

I open tomorrow night as Judge Brack in Hedda Gabler.  Our Hedda is absolutely luminous in the role, and a pleasure to work with.  I wish you could all come see her, and see how this stuff is supposed to work.    The rest of the cast is wonderful too.  I, on the other hand, seem to have gotten too old for this stuff suddenly, and I, frankly, suck.   When did all this having-to-remember-lines stuff start?  When I worked with Aeschylus, he never made us learn stuff . . .

So any good vibes or whatever you like to send, feel free to send my way.  There may be an article tomorrow that I can link; if so, I'll post it here.

The audience will forgive your droped lines when they see your wheel chair and hearing trumpet!! Do they let old farts on stage there?

I am sure you will be wonderful!!! sorry about the old fart line but you did ask for it

Surely you must have been able to remember your lines in rehearsal?  Maybe just some opening night nerves?  If you really think you are going to be in trouble let your fellow actors in on the secret....they are your best hope.  I think it is a case of nerves.....take a deep breath..smile and think of all of the audience as your best friends....they're on your side.

Sure I remember them . . . eventually . . . and don't call me Shirley.    Old joke, I know, but so am I.

Well, obviously!  This is a college production, so I feel like I'm doing a one-man touring show of Oldest Living Graduate in the middle of  a production of You're A Good Man Charlie Brown.

Thanks both of you.  I'll report back.

Having done CT for about 20 years I, too, find that I am not as young as I once was.  Yeah, the memorization gets harder, especially if you don't do it often.  (Skills do decay if not exercised.)

I have to ask if your self-review comment of "I suck" is purely self-generated or if you have gotten that from others?  I often feel my performances are less than that of my fellow actors, but audiences and fellow performers seem to think differently.  My point is that you may just be too hard on yourself.

Finally, don't forget that it is called a "play."  If you'll just get onstage and have fun, it will communicate to your audience.  Whether comedic or tragic, if you are enjoying acting the role, the audience will enjoy your performance more.

Break a leg.

Update:

It doesn't seem to be in the online version of the paper, so I can't link it here, but the local rag's reviewer said that my Brack is "so slimy you want to step on him."

So, I guess it's all good!

Here's a picture of our Hedda and Mrs. Elvsted:

Thanks again for the encouragement!

Congratulations!  That sounds like a very good review to me....even if you muffed some lines you must have gotten the gist of the character across to the audience.....good for you.

Lines, smines.

Part of the reason I prefer directing to perfoming now is having only to memorize the name of the play I'm directing.  And even there, I tend to lean toward one- and two-word titles: Drop Dead, Molly Sweeney, Love Letters, Belles, Amateurs, and Rounding Third to name a few.  Once in a while I go out on a limb and agree to memorize titles like Five Women Wearing the Same Dress and The Farndale Avenue Housing Estates Townswomen's Guild Dramatic Society's Production of "A Christmas Carol".
Break a Leg POB!  Be careful critiquing your own performance.  I tell actors they are the least qualified to judge their performances and the second least qualifed are all on stage with them.  Try not to let your focus wander inward.  Have a ball!

I agrre with castMe. I am my own worst critic.  I'm a director and playwright.  Just in the last year, I have people seeking me out to be in my plays.  I have so many fans and people who believe in me, I've gotten to the point where I have to start believing in myself.  The actor who is playing the lead in my next play acutually told me 'it would be an honour to be in this play'.  Somebody pinch me cause this kind of support has never come my way before.
