bullet Topic: lighting 2 differnt rooms
    Posted: 3/22/05 at 10:47am

I am just looking for general ideas on differnt lighting to use on two different scenes in our upsoming show. One is a library and the other is a Sanitarium. I don't want the light too harsh in the sanitarium, but still want a different effect than the library...any ideas?

Thanks

What show are you doing?

Sounds like it might be HARVEY.

At any rate.............you probably want the library to create a warm feeling............using gels that gently enhance skin colors...area lighting also helps........an area with a table lamp might be lit a bit brighter than the other parts of the room.

For the sanitarium you can create a "flat" look by eliminating most side lighting.....light it head-on and overhead (to soften some shadows)...................

Not a lighting guru here...............but I have picked up this info over the years...................sometimes by harsh experience when the lighting designer lit a scene head-on only for a room which needed depth and warmth.

Good luck.

Yes it is Harvey. Good Call!

we do have limited options (as this is a high school cafetorium) but any new ideas always spur others. Thanks!

I agree

I would use warm colors in the library.

The sanit: I would use a lower intensity with your warmer colors and a lot of front light to give that stark/industrial look but your stage would still be bright wand without major shadows.

I would use something like a gold or amber in the library and some greys or blues in the sanit... maybe a really sharp FOH light or a Light hung directly above the scene...

Using practicals (like table lamps, etc.) in addition to a well lit area using primarily light ambers would help produce a warm feel to the library.  For the sanitarium pure white light coming mainly from overhead may help give you an intense effect that is not too harsh.
