Topic: The Finer Details of Auditioning Posted: 7/29/05 at 3:28pm |
This website is awesome. A big thank you to whoever conceived the idea. Anyway, I was wondering if anybody could clarify some things about auditions. How does one put together an audition book for musical theatre? Is the music copies of originals or what? For New York auditions, how early should I get there to register? Are there tips for picking the best 16 bars of a piece of music? Are there songs I should avoid auditioning with? (I'm an 18 year old female with both belt and head voice. I'd like to show both, and possibly work a Western sort of Oklahoma/Annie Get Your Gun angle.) Here's a hypathetical.. I enter the room, give the pianist my music..then what? Introduce myself? Or not because hey they have my pic and resume? Does the pianist give me a couple of beats intro? I've auditioned for things before, but this is my first audition outside of my usually cozy "we all know each other here" theatre groups. I just don't want to go in not knowing what's happening, and I'm freaking out in preparation. Any pointers would be REALLY appreciated. |

I took a class on auditions in college and as I recall we had a book called something like "Auditioning for New York Theatre" I think it would have answers to all of these questions. maybe someone out there has heard of this book?

I searched that on Amazon and I Googled it but I didn't really find anything definitive. Although I did come across a book that I think might be close. Thanks for your suggestion. Where did you go to college?

Run, do not walk, to the nearest bookstore (or surf over to Amazon) and get a book called Next! This book is absolutely packed with suggestions on how to pick songs, how to dress, how (in great detail) to put your music together and work with the accompanist, and how to conduct yourself during the audition. |
