Topic: A Play Similar to "You Can't Take It With You" Posted: 1/28/13 at 12:39pm |
Hello all!
I'm looking for some plays that are similar to Kaufman and Hart's "You Can't Take It With you." Similar in the sense that they are single sets, ensemble pieces and have an ending where there is a sense of family, community and togetherness at the end. Other Kaufman and Hart pieces wouldn't be too appropriate, so I'd love to get other suggestions you might have! |

I Remember Mama by John Van Druten is the first play that comes to mind. ("Single set" with a couple of inserts.)
Enchanted April by Matthew Barber is second. (First Act: minimal set - 4 upright chairs and a table / Second Act: Spectacularly elaborate Garden Patio set) Auntie Mame by Jerome Lawrence and Robert E. Lee comes next. (Not a "single" set, but could use a "unit" set just fine.) A Majority of One by Leonard Spigelgass follows in fourth place. (Also not "single" set - Actually "Four Interiors", but do-able.) Morning's at Seven by Paul Osborn captures the fifth spot. Over the River and Through the Woods by Joe DiPietro in sixth position. The Last Night of Ballyhoo by Alfred Uhry for seventh and final consideration. ("Single set" with a couple of easy inserts.) All of these plays are - in various ways - funny, warm, amusing, gentle, and wistful. And all of them have endings that espouse a sense of family, community and togetherness. Hope you choose to read and/or present some or all of them. Edited by edh915 - 1/30/13 at 1:26pm |

An eighth and final contender, although it has only two characters in it, would be:
Visiting Mr. Green by Jeff Baron. |
