We are producing All My Sons this summer in a small black box theatre. And we are going to cover the stage and possibly part of the house in "fake grass". The goal is to turn the entire theatre into the Keller's backyard. What do you reccomend? Has anyone used real sod? How does it work? Thanks!!

Depends on how realistic you want it to look and how big your budget is. For my outdoor portion of a recent production, I used that green astro-turf looking outdoor carpet. It worked just fine. |

I have used the astro-turf type carpeting before and in doesn't look to bad. There are more realistic artifical grasses available, but unless you have a very small area, or a large budget, they would probably be cost prohbitive.

I wouldn't try the real sod. I've had several tons of sand brought in with success, but most sod I've seen only looks good weeks after 'planting' --and watering. So stick with the astro-turf.

the real stuff can destroy your theatre with trying to water it, and will NOT maintain a good look after a week or so without natural sunlight - leaving the lights on for 8 hours does not provide what the grass needs to live and maintain a nice green. Unless you have unlimited access to fresh sod to lay in for each weekend, I do not recommend the use of real sod - that's why we are the people that recreate nature!
