We are getting ready for our spring play and was hoping for some comments about these plays Harvey Our Town Arms and The Man As Technical director I know these are about as different as they can be. I've read them, but was just looking for comments, advice etc. This is for high school kids who had a rather bad experience with their last show (and director) we have a new director taking over. I was thinking something not too difficult, yet a play they can enjoy and get excited about If you have other good ideas, I'd love to hear them as well, but these are the current fromt runners (we'll be meeting VERY soon) Thanks!! |

Our Town is a wonderful show (as long as it's done correctly) and is quite appropriate for high school students. I can have a fairly large cast and parts that are appropriate for all skill levels of actors. From a technical perspective the show has no props, minimal set, and and is set in an area that's not to hard to costume. There is a lot of opportunity in it for creative lighting design. The hardest tech part of the show is sound, lots of sound effects. Harvey is a nice classic comedy, but I think the scrpt is a little dated. The cast is small (only 6 or 7 people if I remember correctly). Tech is pretty easy, two interior sets, basic light, minimal sound, simple props and costumes. Only tricky tech piece is having doors the open and closed on thier own for one scene. Dan |

Had a lot of success with a H.S. production of Harvey a few years back. The kids (intown, big city) actually liked the script...the themes of individuality and conformmity really resonated with them. Also great show if you have a strong male (I guess you could go non traditional and use a female?) to play Elwood. The kid has to read as very likeable. I believe there are around 10 characters...although a few are small roles. The script won a Pulitzer prize for drama (1944-45) Good Luck,, Countbio |

Aimee, You will want to check on the rights quickly. We were going to do Harvey in February, but it has become restricted. John |

Everyone's suggestions are great. I would add, if you have more actors than actresses, is THE HASTY HEART. This is a tremendous play that seems have been lost in the folds of time.

G?donya & chookas Aiminee! You will enjoy doing IT! One thing you may want to keep in mind, which is the same for warm props & Pookas alike! Is the difference between a good one & a great one , is the length of it?s pause! |
