Topic: Play Suggestion needed ASAP! Posted: 12/02/11 at 3:41pm |
Struggling community theatre has asked me to direct a replacement show, auditioning in 2 weeks. They haven't settled on a script yet, but they have given these requirements:
Large cast (approx. 15) Roles for children Family Friendly Audience draw These are mine: Sharply written Intelligent Comedy Strong characters and plot They're considering "Cheaper by the Dozen". I haven't read the script, but having seen the movie, I'm not excited about it. Any great suggestions? |

You don't say how many children.
In the same vein, but much better than "Dozen", I'd suggest "Life With Father". Also, a really good show that one of our local groups is doing right now (Christmas themed, but relevant all year) is FrUiTCaKeS by Julian Wiles. Warm and witty, and wears its heart on its sleeve. A gem. Edited by edh915 - 12/04/11 at 11:29am |

Another thought - Is there a non-musical version of "The Secret Garden" available? If it's been adapted well, it could certainly be a winner.

Thanks for the suggestions! I've filed them away for future reference. :) They decided to stick with Cheaper By The Dozen, but I'm relieved to find out that the stage show has virtually nothing to do with the movie.

Aha! I just had a "light bulb" moment. You were referring to the Steve Martin movie, not the original Clifton Webb movie. No wonder you were less than thrilled at the prospect.

Ah, yes, I was referring to the Steve Martin movie, haven't seen the original. :)

Yes. At least there is in the UK. Saw it done a few years ago. Very good adaptation by Neil Duffield. No idea of the publisher, nor whether it is available in the US. |

Thanks, Lazy Bee. I'm going to look for it for myself. I'm a sucker for Frances Hodgson Burnett - particularly "The Secret Garden" and "Little Lord Fauntleroy"; not so much "The Little Princess". I do like two rather obscure ones: "The Lost Prince" and "Two Little Pilgrims' Progress."
Neil Duffield... I am now on a quest. |
