You guys are always so helpful, so I can't resist your expertise this year. We are a small drama department that grows a little more each year. We have about 300 students in the school. Anyway, I'm looking at Almost, Maine this year. I'm not completely sold on it. The last scene makes me a little nervous for a high school production. Am I thinking too much here? Did I mention I teach in a conservative area?
We've done A Bad Year for Tomatoes, Faith County, Dr. Funk's Christmas Extravaganza, Dirty Work at the Crossroads, The Brothers Grimm Spectaculathon (One Act), and The Monkey's Paw (One Act). I'm not doing a musical this year, and I try to stay away from children's theatre because another teacher does that in the spring. I think the kids would like doing Almost, Maine. Last year, I was nervous about a character drinking Scotch, but no one said a word. Maybe implied sex is okay, then-- |

First - you clearly have impeccable taste.
I don't think anyone would be offended by Almost, Maine. It's such a sweet show. Is the scotch integral to the scene? (Almost, Maine was the most-produced play in American High schools last year, so I doubt that it was a roadblock for many places.)

Thanks! I do have good taste!
I know I panic too much. I just like my job. I'm sure hundreds of other high school theatre departments can't be wrong. I'll probably give it a shot unless something else comes along before Sept. |

I see a couple of "One Acts" on your list of previously done plays so you might take a look at Peter Shaffer's "Black Comedy". It's a hysterical one-act farce.

Well Dang! A high school 15 miles away from us has announced they are doing Almost, Maine. What to do, what to do....

In the long run ... does it make a difference? When it comes to high schools aren't most of the audiences made up of students, friends and parents. We've had many high schools in our area do the same shows and I don't know that it's affected any of them. Especially with HS talent, sometimes a certain show "just works."

Oh, I assumed we probably wouldn't get the license to do it. We probably don't have anything to worry about? Hmm.

That will depend on the licensing agency. One year we had two theatres that were very close performing Joseph at the same time. You never know till you ask. |
