Community Theater Green Room Discussion Board: looking for ideas for public domain song

Message

   I volunteer with a performing arts magazine in the Kansas City area, and I was wanting to look into making a viral video/commercial where people are lipsynching to a song:

Was hoping to get suggestions for songs that are in the public domain that involve the performing arts/theatre. I've got a list of places that offer public domain songs, but I'm looking for specific song suggestions. 

Any help would be appreciated.

	My first reaction was: Well, you're not going to get anything good. Copyright goes back to the early part of the XXth century, what're you going to find that's even moderately recognizable from MT before that... And then it hit me, Gilbert & Sullivan's in the PD. I'd start there.

	Just remember that even if the song is in the public domain, there may be rights associated with the specific performance of the song that you plan to use and since you plan to 'sync' the audio performance to video then those would likely be sync rights.

	You've probably seen this response from a town that was blasted by a news magazine as being 'dead.' Don't know what they went through for the rights, but it was well worth it.
