I will be directing Leading Ladies this summer in NW Ohio. For those of you who have directed or been involved with this show in the past, can this show be done "black box" with specialty set pieces, or does it need a full blown set?

You could probably make it work either way although in my opinion a full blown set would be the better option for this show.

I've seen the show done in a black box and I am just about to direct/design it for our theatre, which is also a black box. A realistic set for the main living room is pretty important, but the other locations can easily be achieved with suggestive set pieces and good lighting.

Really, everything happens in the big main room. There's a little action outside through a glass door that can be suggested, and a bunch of stuff off in an upstairs bedroom, but really... just get a big living room suggested, and you're good.

I directed this a year ago for a company here and it was their 4th highest grossing show ever.. Don't underestimate this show, we did fabric over the furniture and a sign that said train station and moose lodge.. honestly it didn't read as well.. I think if you have a theatre that would allow for a small wagon or something you could do it that way.. for duncan and megs phone scene- just put them in the aisles on two seperate phones, that should do it. one final note.. get your guys in drag early- make sure they are totally comfortable with it and make plans for the quick changes, they are tough-- be ready.. keep the pace flying, have fun and make sure that the play is honest and the love between meg and leo is real.... the rest should take care of its self!
