    Posted: 1/09/11 at 1:24pm
I have recently signed on to direct a production of Cinderella which will take place at the end of April. I would love to open the play with a giant book of Cinderella (think the old Disney princess movies that opened with some one reading a very decorative book). I would love for the book to actually have pages that turn to create part of the sets. For example: turn a page in the book and on the pages is painted Cinderella's house with the fireplace etc. Turn the page again and you see the Royal dressing room. I want the production to literally feel as though the book is coming to life.

Anyone have any ideas on making this happen?
Thanks for your help!

There is another discussion on this forum about making a giant book.  If you'd rather print the pages than print, then write me.

I did a production of Cinderella several years back for which the Director had a fold-out greeting card, that she wanted the set to be like. While I don't have a reproduction of what that card looked like, you can find photos of the production here:

The Castle was close to twelve feet tall, there were several windows that could open "Laugh-In" style, and for the ball, panels opened to reveal a whole wall of gilded decoration. A few scenes took place downstage of the castle, and there were also platforms right in front of the castle facade.

Its not quite a book, but it will hopefully give you some ideas for similar approaches.

Thanks for the link to your pics! That looked neat! I always love to see how different groups choose to imagine the same show.

We opened our production of Beauty and the Beast with a giant book (12' x 4' or so) that was a hinged frame with painted front cover that doubled as the show drop. It opened magically to a scrim that had a painted image of a red rose on it. When we got to the story-telling section of the introduction, the lighting shifted to show actors behind the scrim, pamtomiming the action of the intro. That book did come to life.
