Calendar Event: Mayfly Playhouse 24-hour theater Posted: 1/16/11 at 10:05pm |
The Mayfly Playhouse returns to New London CT as part of the 32nd Annual
Hygienic Art Salon des Independents arts and performance extravaganza. Performance will be presented at the Crocker House Ballroom, 35 Union Street, in New London, 8pm.
At 8pm Friday, seven playwrights will be given a theme and prop (previously undisclosed), and a cast for each that will be chosen by random selection from a pool of 28 actors. They have until 7am Saturday to write a brand new 10-minute play, based on the theme given, incorporating the prop, and custom-tailored for their cast. At 8am Saturday, the casts and directors will be given their scripts, and have until 5pm to complete rehearsals. With one quick tech run-through to coordinate scene changes and lighting cues, they will retire backstage at 7:30 when the house opens. At 8pm Saturday night, twenty-four hours after the first actor's name was drawn from a hat, the show goes up. One night of performance, seven world premiere plays, written and rehearsed in one turn of the sun. And with the last curtain call, it all fades into memory. There are no small roles, only roles with a low line-load and minimal stage time.

And just to clarify, the show happens on February 5, 2011, even though in the subject line it appears as 05/2/11, so don't show up on May 2nd. We'll be done by then.

It truly is. And perhaps the best part about it is that the plays aren't "rehearsed to death", but still very fresh. We do a quick tech run-through to coordinate set/light changes and correct prop placement, and even after seeing the whole show that first time (and FOR the first time), the final performance only one hour later is still alive and even better. This is my third year producing it (out of three) and even though I neither write, direct nor act for it, I get so much enjoyment out of it I'm always sad when the last bow is taken knowing I'll never see it again.
