Gracie,
We need a bit of qualification to your question: best for what? It depends on what you want from an adaptation - particularly in terms of length (or brevity) and cast size. For example, Gerald P. Murphy's adaptation is great if you want a 30 minute show, but if you wish it to fill the whole evening, it's totally inadequate! |

We did "Little Women - The Broadway Musical" by Knee, Dickstein, and Howland at our high school. It's a great show. You need 1 extremely strong female voice plus 5 very good female voices and 4 male solo quality voices. It is moving, funny, romantic, and shows a strong female character. It's a little long as written ... probably 2:30 plus a 15 minute intermission. It had a fairly short run on Broadway but I think Sutton Foster was nominated for a Tony as Jo. Patrons may have found it a little "choppy" but I love it.

Not sure if it's best, but take a look at http://www.plays4theatre.com/bookdetails.php?pr=305

I have to agree with Lazy Bee about the Murphy adaption of Little Woman. It's an excellent show.
