Topic: Boy meets Girl plays needed Posted: 8/03/10 at 2:15am |
Hi everyone! I am looking for suggestions for a non-musical, romantic drama or comedy - something along the lines of boy meets girl, boy and girl fall in love, boy and girl have conflict, boy and girl have happy ending type thing.
Something similar to Barefoot in the Park, You Can't Take It With You and Sabrina Fair.
It'd be nice if it were something more well known as well.
Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated!
Thanks!

Whatever you do avoid the show "Boy meets Girl".

I think you mean Boy Gets Girl. Very disturbing play. Pretty powerfull and thought provoking if done well and not played soley for the obvious shock value.
dschock, I got nuthin' for ya beyond what you mentioned already. Neil Simon might have one or two more boy meets girl type shows. Edited by B-M-D - 8/03/10 at 11:00am |

Personally, I've got a girl meets boy play, The Matchmakers:
"After a lame homecoming date at Wendy's and the dissolution of her parents' marriage, Bree begins to think that she's been cursed. When her mother declares that she's going to marry her loathsome marriage counselor, she's almost certain. And when she starts falling for that marriage counselor's geeky, awkward son, she's convinced. The Matchmakers is a wild, romantic comedy, complete with a strange clown, blind dates, and a swordfight."
Beyond that, Neil Simon would seem the likely choice, but I'm drawing a blank on specifics.
???Why are there eight million romantic comedy films but very few romantic comedy plays???
Teresa Rebeck?
Maybe John Patrick Shanley's Italian American Renconciliation? Although language and subject matter is likely to be provocative.
Ooh. Um... Frankie and Jonny in the Claire de Lune. Less a comedy than a drama, I suppose.

Almost, Maine is a quirky romantic comedy that has a series of scenes that show couples at different stages of relationships.

I've just had one published that is a BmG feelgood play, much as you describe. It's called "No, Minister" and its synopsis reads:-
"When novice church minister Ashley is under financial pressure, she decides to take in a lodger - nice professional lady - except the applicant who wheedles his way in is smooth-talking Stuart, who won’t tell her what he does and generally makes her ministry, shall we say difficult. Of course they’ll end up together, that’s no surprise, but how, when all they do is argue?"
I am in the UK and it was written with a local viewpoint, but there's nothing that wouldn't translate by changing the odd word here and there. I can email you a pdf if you'd like to read it.

On the Neil Simon end of things you should try "Star Spangled Girl."
Otherwise, although they are not household names, "Enchanted April" and "Somewhere In Between" are great shows. Note: Don't advertise a show as a "Romantic Comedy". (Sounds too much like a "chick flick" for some.) "Comedy for Couples" seems to work better. |

Way to go, SM Ted!!!
I heartily agree and would only like to suggest that "A Midsummer Night's Dream" would work well, too. |
