Topic: Christmas show for children Posted: 8/12/10 at 3:05pm |
Our group is putting together its 2011 season, and i always direct the fall/winter show. I would love to put on a christmas show aimed at children. Not sure were to start script wise...any suggestions? we are a fairly small group, so no large cast shows..
Thanks!!

It is not exactly a Christmas Show per se but one of our theaters did Frog and Toad at Christmas and I thought it was wonderful and only has 5 characters but it is a musical.
We have a version of Christmas Carol that uses less than 10 people and is only 30-45 minutes long depending on which version you choose - it was adapted by one of our past board members.

You could always do a pantomime check out Stuart is a member here, along with David from P&M Sales & others.
Panto is flexable with numbers & you can generaly localise the scripts.
Also these days you can peruse the scripts online. Edited by JoeMc - 8/16/10 at 10:13pm |

I have a show that was a huge success for our group two years ago and was produced last year by another theater who had sold out performances too. The audience laughed and cried when they were supposed to so I think it worked well. The script uses both contemporary and period scenes based on the famous editorial response, Yes, Virginia, there is a Santa Claus. Let me if you would like to see an excerpt.

How small is fairly small? (In the following, I have assumed a maximum of 20, but, for example, James Barry's version of Three Musketeers has a cast of 3.)
This link takes you to a collection of "family shows" (suitable for mixed audiences of adults and children) As Joe McC has said above, we offer British Pantomimes (these may seem odd at first sight, but the do go down well with US audiences). Again, these are aimed at family audiences. Then there are shows to be performed by adults to an audience of children (only one in this category, and not specifically Christmasssy.) |

I'd highly recommend a play we represent at YouthPLAYS, The Christmas Princess by Arthur M. Jolly. In a line:
A spoiled princess must find three magical Christmas gifts for her parents if she is to escape an arranged marriage to the world's stupidest prince. It's had a number of successful productions, and you can go here to order a free electronic perusal: http://youthplays.com/plays/view/122 Cheers, Jon Dorf www.youthplays.com |
