Does anyone know of a high school appropriate small-cast musical with predominately female roles?  We literally have like 2-3 boys and over a dozen girls in our drama department.

Any input would be very much appreciated.

When are you intending to stage it?
The reason for that question is Anna of Nazareth by Sue Gordon - the Christmas story from an unusual perspective.

We're staging it in the spring, so I'm afraid that wouldn't work.  Thank you though. ^_^

Brenda Bly: Teen Detective

Book and Lyrics by Kevin Hammonds: Music by Charles Miller

Synopsis

It's 1958 — a time of rock and roll, space discovery, and great hope for a bright future.
But trouble is brewing at the Whitney Ellis Private School For Girls. Only days away from the opening night of the end of term musical, "Rocket Girl",

the leading lady is knocked unconscious with a sandbag. Once again it is up to our favourite teenage sleuth, Brenda Bly, to solve the crime, catch the crook and save
the day.

CAST: M3-9 F9-13.

SCENES: Various simple settings
Instrumentation:, Keyboard II, Drums, Bass

Seems like a fun show.   Samples on youtube.

Here's a pretty popular show that is mostly girls, and you could probably get by with three guys.  It's called Drama Club Must Die.  The plot deals with a drama club which is on the chopping block because of (surprise!) school budget cuts.  They must write and produce their own version of The Wizard of Oz in just one week.  Check it out here:

Bye Bye Birdie has lots of female parts, but you need at least three strong men to play the parts of Conrad Biride, Albert Peterson and Mr. MacAfee.  There's also a four part male course, but we had girls do those parts and it went off without a hitch.  It's a really fun show that really resonated with our students and our community.

Annie, Wizard of Oz (if you don't mind females playing some of the 'male' parts) Alice in wonderland -- many of the characters are fantasy so they can be male OR female.
Nunsense (for a very small cast)
You can also do a musical review or Cabaret where you pick different scenes and songs from various plays.

"The Boyfriend" can be done with very few males.  It's a classic and who doesn't love the 1920s?

"Suds: The Rocking 60s Musical Soap Opera" has 3 females and 1 male.  It's a comic romp through all the best songs of the 60s.

Good luck and let us know what you choose and how it went! :-)

Take a look at "Dear Edwina" from MTI. There's a junior version available as well.

I've certainly struggled with the same problem of having too few guys. Here are the musicals I've done over the past few years: "Little Shop of Horrors" (3 guys: Seymour, Mushnik, Dentist), "The King & I" (3 guys: King, Kralahome, Sir Edward/Captain), "Rodgers & Hammerstein's Cinderella" (I had about 5 guys for this one but I think you could do it with just 2: King and Prince), "Wizard of Oz" (3 guys: Lion/Zeke, Wizard/Marvel, Guard/Uncle Henry), and "High Spirits" (2 guys: Charles, Mr. Bradman). This last one is the rarely done adaptation of Noel Coward's "Blithe Spriit". I chose it in large part because it could be done with just two guys. Our audience was smaller due to a lack of name recognition but the show was a lot of fun.
