This board was so helpful a couple of years ago.  I thought I'd ask again.

I'm a high school teacher.

I did Faith County two years ago.  It was great fun and just perfect for us.  Last year, we did several small Christmas-themed shows.  We've also done a melodrama.

This year, I'm kicking around a few ideas.  I'd like to do Rumors, but I'm unsure about the language, so I think I'll wait until after I'm tenured--Smile

I'm open to other farce suggestions--heavy on female roles.  I'm kicking around Here Come the Brides.  Some have said you had success, but when I read the preview, I thought some of the lines were dated or unbelievable in that I couldn't picture someone really saying the lines.  Am I being too picky?  I don't mean to be disrespectful.

I'd like to avoid children's theatre since another teacher does that, and I don't think we're quite ready for a musical.  I also have not found much in the "written for high school" genre that sounds appealing.

Any suggestions?

Most of the "written for high school" plays are garbage. (I took a look at that Here Come the Brides - I see what you mean)

I, of course, have written a number of gloriously successful plays for high school which are not garbage. (As a high school teacher, myself...) Take a look at The Craving (10 F 8 M, 9 either, fits between 14-27 actors):

Here's the blurb from playscripts:

"Screenwriter Terry Kyle Morris has just written his first screenplay, a heartwarming emotional journey. His dreams are answered when a big Hollywood studio decides to produce it, but the dream turns into a nightmare as they transform his beautiful script into a zombie slasher flick."

You can read it online here:

And there's also The Brothers Grimm Spectaculathon, (kind of like the complete works of Shakespeare (abridged) but with the fairy tales of the Brothers Grimm and less likely to get you fired) - it's been produced nearly 500 times and in 11 countries. Read it for free here:

A Bad Year for Tomatoes by John Patrick was a delight to do and the audience loved it.

Wow, thanks for the reply.   We actually did The Brothers Grimm Spectaculathon  for our district one-act competition two years ago.  I really liked the play.   We also did Elf Rebellion, The Bestest Christmas Ever in Texas, Clausarella, The Christmas Tree Thief, and Revenge of the Gingerbread Boy for our Christmas show last year.  We had a blast.  Thanks for the work you do, especially for high school kids.  We also use your work for forensics. Smile

I did take a look at that show.  This could be a possibility.  Thanks!

Cool! Let me know if I can suggest another show for you. I have a number of full-length shows which are a lot of fun if you liked the humor in the one acts.

To quote Glengarry Glen Ross (probably not appropriate for high school) - "you don't sell a man one car (play), you sell a man five cars (plays) over fifteen years."

StaceySue, Don's got some great plays.  We actually represent one at YouthPLAYS, One Good Thing, though I think that particular one might be too edgy (until you get tenure).  But there are a number of other great choices, so I'd invite you to visit the site at www.youthplays.com and browse around.  You can read any play we represent as a free electronic perusal.  The company is still relatively new and growing rapidly, so new plays and musicals show up all the time.

I'd also recommend a pair of my own plays (like Don, I'm considered pretty good at what I do), both of which are published by Playscripts:

High School (non) Musical, a take-off on the Disney hit, and Tiny Tim Runs the Marathon, a crazy comedy with everyone from Tiny Tim and Oliver Twist to a trio of homicidal fairy tale princesses.

I also have quite a few one-act dramedies that do well in competition, but it sounds as if you're looking more for full-length comedies at this time.

Cheers,
Jon Dorf

We had fun with The Amorous Ambassador here in Marathon, FL.  It's a nice door-slammer farce.
