Topic: Seymour Krelborn Audition Song Posted: 7/09/10 at 4:43pm |
Can someone suggest a song for me to sing at a Little Shop audition?
I've never been in a musical before. I'm actually terrified of singing in public but that's why I want to do it, to get over my fear cause I really like LSOH. Obviously I can't sing a song from the show but can someone suggest something similar? I've never been a musical guy as I prefer plays but the few musicals I really like are little shop, the producers and wedding singer but i'm open to whatever. |

"I believe in You" from "How to Succeed in Business without Really Trying"
"I Wanna be a Producer" or "That Face" from "The Producers"
"My First Love Song" or "Who can I Turn To" or "Nothing Can Stop Me Now!" from "The Roar of the Greasepaint ..."
I could go on ..........

Why can't you sing a song from the show?
I find it most beneficial to sing a song from the show if possible, unless they ask you to not do so.
If they allow it, "Suddenly Seymour" is the one to sing, of course.

Unless the director specifically asks for a song from the show, I have always heard it is poor form to sing from the show for which you are auditioning.

For the audition, I'd pick a song from another musical set in the 50's: Grease, Pajama Game, or Bye Bye Birdie. You want something with the same feel, without being from the same musical. Stay with something upbeat if you are at all leary of the ballad.
As mentioned above, I've always been told not to audition with a song from the show, unless it is specifically required in the audition notice. You never know if the director is leaning towards a different interpretation of the character than what is commonly known. Why take the chance of delivering a song that is exactly opposite of what the director envisions? If s/he wants to hear you sing something from the show, they will usually bring that piece out at call-backs. I know I do. |

Just another point of view - as a director, I an NOT particularly interested in hearing an audition song that is not from the show. Just because somebody can sing J. Pierrpont Finch does not, necessarily, mean that they can sing Seymour. Not to mention, Little Shop has a very R&B based sound which regular Broadway shows don't (How to Succeed) or the rock and roll sound of Grease or Bye Bye Birdie.
Just my 2¢ worth. |

If you are going to sing from Little Shop, I'd pick "Grow for Me."

For whatever reason, however, it's GENERALLY considered bad form to sing a song from the show unless the audition notice either asks or specifically allows it. I stick to that -- if the director wants something from the show, it's simple enough to say so.
