bullet Topic: Looking for a challenge...
    Posted: 6/16/10 at 12:29am

I am a director for a high school competitive drama team.  Last year we challenged ourselves by performing Eurydice.  We got rave reviews!  I am looking for something for the up-coming year and am having a hard time finding something that I like.  Can you suggest any plays that will really push the kids (and myself)?  I would LOVE any help you can give!

Are you doing one-act or full-length plays?

Either a one-act or a cutting.  Guess that would have been helpful to know~

Okay then -

From my work - check out White Buffalo (Regional runner-up in Texas 5A 2 years ago) - full length show, need to cut it - I know the person who cut it to 40 mins if you're interested.

The Birds: A Modern Adaptation (full-length)

(read it online for free by clicking on read sample)

for a one-act, try The Bells of Charlemont (state champion in North Dakota this year)

And brand new this year, Oz, my strange modern adaptation of the Wizard of Oz - one-act (should be availble in about 2 weeks, but I can send you an advance copy)

From stuff I didn't write, I'd recommend Black Snow

Amadeus (Sam French)

and anything and everything by Don Nigro, particularly Paganini and Mariner. Some pretty awesome stuff.

If you consider Shakespeare to be a challenge, then there is a series of  Shakespeare abridgements which condense the original texts to 30- to 50-minute shows, whilst retaining the original language.
