Topic: need a play for a very strong actress Posted: 2/16/10 at 3:51pm |
Hi all,
I'm looking for a comedy, probably, for a very strong comedic character actress. Hoping to find something quirky, boarderline absurd.
Thanks,
Tom (Pasadena, CA)

What age range? For 30-45 or so, try Wonder of the World, by David Lindsay-Abaire. Hilarious. |

How long a piece are you looking for?
Are you looking for a solo piece or a piece with a strong female lead role? If it's the latter, how many people do you want in the rest of the company? |

As soon as I saw "absurd" I thought of "Oh, Dad, Poor Dad, Mama's Hung You In The Closet And I'm Feelin' So Sad."
More conventionally, there's always "Auntie Mame". "Lettice and Loveage" is wonderful if you have a strong supporting female, too. Rarely done, but a really nice, heartwarming, gentle comedy is "A Majority Of One." That's all that comes immediately to mind. Edited by edh915 - 2/17/10 at 1:43pm |

Well, if you're talking one-woman shows, there's always "The Search For Intelligent Life In The Universe."

Full length. I'm totally flexible on cast size.
Thanks,
Tom

I would recommend "Getting Gary" by Brian Mitchell.
"Marrying Gary was the worst mistake of Nancy's life. So, why does she want him back?" Life hasn’t been easy for Nancy this past year. After divorcing her unemployed husband and setting her alimony payments, he won the lottery. Her children are running her life and her job as a Chicago-area publishing editor is in dire jeopardy because she hasn’t found a new client in some time. But things are finally looking up! She has been in contact with Vladimir Flamenco, a Russian self-help author, and he is thinking of allowing her to publish his books in English! So when he demands an advance of seventy-five thousand dollars, Nancy approves the advance, only to find that Flamenco was a complete fraud and has run off with her company’s money.
Now, Nancy’s boss is on her to get the manuscript or get the money back, or go to prison! So, with the help of her friend, Beth, Nancy sets out to get the money from the only person she knows that has that kind of money, her ex-husband, Gary. You can find it at playsbybrian.com |

How about Pamela Parker's "Dreams of Martha Stewart"? It's a one woman show. A mid range age-wise actress plays 15 different people. Black box set. You'd need an amzing actress. She doesn't leave the stage for 55 minutes.
