bullet Topic: Play selection "Urinetown"
    Posted: 3/09/10 at 7:06pm
Our play selection committe is currently in the process of making recommendations for the 2011 season. They have been charged to come up with a season that will produce strong sales. A new concept.A feeble attempt at humor.Has anyone had experience in producing the musical "Urinetown?"We understand its a great show, but are concerned if it it will appeal  to our season ticket base which is made up largely of older audience members.Comments?

Been there.. Done that.. had those concerns.. We have a fairly conservative base.. However, many loved it, some hated it, some thought it was crazy funny, some just thought it was stupid... It went over well overall.. It was well attended.. and I don't think it hurt us any..

I'm a theater guy, and I have been for a lot of years.  I am, therefore, a "largely older audience member".

For what it's worth, I hated "Urinetown".  I could see why it was popular with the younger set, and I could appreciate aspects of the show that were, in and of themselves, technically or artistically impressive.  But the overall experience was negative, negative, negative.  (And I hated the ending!)

On the other hand, I really liked "The Musical of Musicals (The Musical!)" and highly recommend it.  I also think "Gutenberg! The Musical!" is tremendous fun.  (But it is a very, very small production.  It makes "The Fantasticks" look like a large cast show.)
