Topic: Best Area to live in Posted: 9/10/09 at 10:58am |
I am closing in on retirement. One of my options is to move to an area that has a thriving number of community theatres. Does anyone have a suggestion of a good area? Or, how I might search for such an area on the internet? Thanks...

Sarasota has a lot of good theater both amateur and professional. Bradenton is just north of Sarasota a community theatre that was good 40 years ago. They just built a very nice new theater. Venice is to the south and I believe they have at least one community theatre and a regional theater. I grew up in Sarasota.
Now I'm in the Boston area and there is certainly a lot of theatre around here.

Given the weather, I wouldn't recommend retiring here.
However, I moved to McHenry IL, (about 40 miles or so NW of Chicago) about a year and a half back. I can count eight companies with shows in production or pre-production within a 30 minute drive of home right now. Expand the range to 50 minutes or so to include the closer reaches of what you'd consider the suburbs, and it more than doubles. |

You could always migrate down under?
Pobably the Eastern States have more community theatres, but the WA & SA is more suitable for retirees! Unless you check out Tasmania?

Ohio - we have huge numbers of community theatres in this state! Google OCTA (the Ohio Community Theatre Association) for a listing!

Northwest Indiana is nice from a theatre standpoint. I don't know if you'd care for the winters. Check out the Northwest Indiana Excellence in Theatre Foundation website. (www.nwindianatheatre.org) In Lake County, IN there are over a dozen active groups of all sizes and shapes.
Also, you might check out www.curtainrising.com It lists over 8,000 theatre groups in the U.S. - listed by state, and towns within each state. I use it sometimes when I'm traveling to see if something's going to be playing near where I'm staying. |

Eastern Massachusetts. You can't swing a cat without hitting a community theatre. Go to www.emact.org to get an idea of the number of theatres in the area.
