Topic: Scrim question Posted: 2/26/10 at 8:07pm |
I'm doing Flowers for Algernon and have several flash back/memory scenes where Charlie cannot remember what his parents looked like. I was thinking about having these scenes behind a scrim until he remembered what they looked like then removing the scrim from the stage. The script suggests using stockings over their faces until he remembers but I'd rather not take that route. Do I want to:
a) use a white scrim and have sillhouets? or
b) use a black scrim with some view of the actors?
All advice is appreciated!

Why not slowly transition from a silhouette to a full reveal? Then you remove the scrim--or have them walk through it.
Here's how it would look with a chameleon scrim: You first see the parents in silhouette....then wiht a light cue change you see them rimmed in light....then with another light cue change you see them through the scrim, but they are slightly diffused and have a characteristic glow--like a halo around them. Then they walk through the scrim (Chameleon is the only scrim that can be set up to walk through....achieving secret entrances).
Keep in mind that you can also project on the scrim--front projection or rear projection.
You can even set up the scrim effect to have them silhouetted in a setting--like against the beach.
BTW--color doesn't matter so much.
If you want a discussion of the lighting to achieve any of the above, just write me.
