bullet Topic: Model Sets?
    Posted: 12/18/09 at 12:53pm
Need to build a model set for a class. Ideas on how? What material works best? Cardboard? Stirafoam (sp)?

It is relitivly simple and I simply want to convay the idea of what I want.

Also, do I need to set up a grand and the travelers and such? Thanks!

*all ideas ar helpful :-)

Don't know what your "class" requirment is, but we have been judging models for a state compitition for the last few years. What most folks have used is foam core display board grade 1/8 in  or so.. Some use thicker foam, but it is usually too ungainly. Others use Cardboard (poster board) and cut and paint it as needed....

If you want to make it look right, and include all the detail you can stand, I would suggest you buy balsa (the wood used to build model airplanes) at your local model shop and build your set as a real miniature version of the full size design.  It comes in dimensional sticks, sheets, and dowels.  There's a little money involved (they don't seem to give balsa wood away for free, darn it!), but it is easier to be so much more accurate and detailed than with the cheaper mediums (paper, cardboard, foamcore, etc.)

Being made from wood that is very light and easy to cut, shape, bend, sand, and assemble into an accurate, to scale structure, it also finishes very similar to the 'grown up version' with paint or stain.

Growing old is mandatory. Growing up is optional.
