bullet Topic: Troupe Lock-In
    Posted: 10/21/09 at 9:50am
I run a small community theatre with 33 members (all children aged 8-19).  The kids would like to have a troupe lock-in and have been planning it for about 2 months.

What is the absolute MINIMUM number of kids for which you would agree to have a lock-in?  Lately, they can't pull more than 5 or 6 kids in for a jr. troupe meeting.  I really don't want to waste an evening away from my family for 5 or 6 kids.

BTW ... I usually have 15-20 show up for any audition, so it's not a matter of the kids not being interested in acting ... just the meetings.  The 5 or 6 who regularly attend the meetings are the ones who are only in one show a year (because of other obligations) and don't want to miss any information or lose contact with the troupe.  (I've fought and fought to completely drop the jr. troupe meetings and just send information via our websight or through e-mail, but other board members and parents want the jr. troupe meetings to contine.)

I guess you just have to ask yourself, aren't those 5 or 6 worth it? Not trying to be mean or flip, but if there are 5 or 6 and you usually have participation of 15 - 20, that's a third to a fourth of your gang.. and who knows, if you pump it right, you might get a few more in for a "special" event vs a regular meeting... Just a thought.

"lock in'?
As a Justice I understand what a 'lock up'  is, having held Court in a number of local Gaols & Police stations.
I sort of get the gist of a jr meeting, but what is the 'lock in' bit about?

LOL Gaafa .... a lock-in is a party where no one can exit until the time set (in our case 7am).  It's like a glorified slumber party or sleep over.  There are games and activities planned so the group doesn't get bored.

MartyW ... after I posted I thought the same thing.  So what if it's 5 or 6 ... those 5 or 6 will have a GREAT experience and perhaps invite others to come next time.  I have tons of theatre games planned so I know they won't get bored.

It's kind of funny;  the kids who did most of the planning are the ones not coming.

We had these lock-ins in college - they were actually quite fun, and we learned alot, too.

I'm glad that the concept is still going strong.

It takes a young crowd who can sleep on a hard stage floor in a sleeping bag and not wake up requiring Percoset.
