There is a member of our theatre board who has been causing ripples lately. Many other board members have approached me about the sly glances and rude remarks. Our problem is that this person is our Vice-President, and is also is in possession of all of our archival tapes of past productions as we've not been able to have them copied onto DVD yet. I've also been approached by community members regarding how underhanded and gossipy this person is. Can this person be voted off the board at our next election? How do we handle the archives? I'm getting uncomfortable/creepy feelings of distrust. |

Sorry to hear you're having this trouble.
Hopefully you have access to the company bylaws to check procedures for removal, or someone on your board who has that knowledge. Whether or not you follow through at this time, you should be certain of your options.
Discretion being the better part of nasty confrontations, you might check to see if there are people this VP has not totally alienated and enlist them to investigate the situation. They could also check on the archives and make sure they are safe from harm. If the VP is working with others on the archives, they also may have access to them.
I would hope the situation could be resolved peacefully (and that the VP really is not uncouth enough to be vindictive), but search out "cooler heads" for solutions.
Best of luck,
-DW-

You just have one person like this? Count yourself lucky. Is this person so bad you cannot wait until the end of their term? Sly glances and rude remarks....Ok they may be a jerk, but are they fulfilling the requirements of the position of VP? As for the tapes, if you are someone else is willing to take on the responsibility of transfering them to dvd, just ask for them. That way you aren't taking something away from them, but instead appear to be helping them out. And finally, like DWolfman said, check your bylaws.

Sadly, our bylaws still aren't complete (Something else that's on my list of "to-do's" that's simply not getting any shorter!). We have managed to get her out of her "VP" seat and into a "member at large", but she has to go. So, since we don't have completed bylaws that would cover this, can we simply vote her out?!
(BTW ... the straw that broke the camels back was the fact that she brought her video camera to a rehearsal she knew I wouldn't be at and taped the rehearsal ... supposely to help her daughter improve her role. Unfair to the other kids in the production and ILLEGAL!!!)

Off the main topic but: FYI - even the archival tapes may be illegal, unless you've gotten permission from the individual or orgnanization controlling the rights to the show.

No, they're legal. I always get permission from the rights holder before a show is recorded.
