Topic: sick actor! Posted: 7/24/04 at 12:35am |
hello! i have a quick question....it is my first time directing a show..it is going amazingly well and smoothly....We open in a little less than two weeks, and yesterday at rehearsal our lead came and said she went to the doctor and most likely has mono. AHH!..I did some quick thinking and asked our musical director to learn the part and understudy for her...she will be fine at the part, but the sick actress is still intent on doing the role---now, having had mono before, I know that she will be extremely ill, and i dont want any other actors to get sick either...Should I let her attend rehearsals still? or completely replace her? And, if I do completely replace her, should I still leave her name in the program? they are being printed in a few days. Any advice would be much appreciated! thanks

People with mono often have severe symptoms and it is pretty highly contageous (maybe that is why it has been called the kissing disease). I think what I would recommend is to line up that understudy and have her at rehearsals every day doing the part. The leading lady needs to be home resting and recouping and studying her part in the meantime in case she does get well enough to go on in the performance. Put both names in the program (actress "A" first, and Understudy as "understudy") then if there is any way possible, assuming you are doing more than one performance and Miss Mono gets well enough, let them each do a performance. Good luck.

Hi Andrea, Mono, in my experience, has varying degrees of severity. I had one daughter flat on her back for weeks, and the other didn't miss a day of school and you would have never known she was sick. You might still be fine with your leading lady. Why don't you ask her to have her doctor decide if she is okay to do the show? As for contagious, if she doesn't share drinks or kisses with anyone you should be okay. I am with you on the understudy. I would want one just in case. Good luck on your opening. Linda |
