Our community theater is trying to choose as small
musical..."The Spitfire Grill" is on the list and looking
like the winner. I've been ask to design and build a set and I'm completely at a loss. It is suggested as a unit set...something simple, but there are so many diferent locations to be identified. Help!!?? Any ideas or suggestions??

From what I gather & suggested by it being a unit set.
Use trucks or a revolve if you have one?
There are lots of ways it can become a multi area set, with lighting as well.
Also the write up might give you some ideas;-

Look in the back of the script... it has a basic plan. I started with that and then went in my own general direction.
I had the main level back 5 feet from the apron and regular 3 inch platforms as the Spitfire.. I used a second level (3 feet high 10 x10) SR to be Percy's room with a plain window- no walls that flew in and then used that for other scenes. (if  you can't fly you can just set a window on braces and remove it)
Outside scenes were played on the 5 foot area in front of the Spitfire.
I did not use full flats for the set, just windows, doors etc with no walls.

Lighting plays a LARGE role in this show as with Percy's intro at the beginning behind bars, it was done with a projection.
The scrim in the background had projections depicting seasons etc.
Think SIMPLE... it makes the music stand out. Good luck, this is an AWESOME SHOW!!

I got to see this wonderful musical....It was in a black box. The sunrise scene was done on top of the counter in the restaurant...Lighting was outstanding ! You can do really neat things with this one...
