Anyone have any good ideas on how to do a palm tree bark?

I have heard them rustle - but as for mimicking thier barklng, I have no idea?

corrugated cardboard or 1/2'' sheet styrofoam (found at homedepot) wrapped around the base and exacto knife to cut the lines. Once you apply paint, it would look awesome.
I guess it depends on what kind of trunk you're trying to make.

My recollection is that most palm trees have relatively smooth bark. There are usually subtle rings where the the palm fronds were attached. Some times not so subtle. These were typically 1/2" to 1" apart. Some palms still have the base of the fronds still attached to the trunk after the fronds have died and fallen off. Do a Google Images search on "palm tree" for inspiration. I would likely paint them, but I've seen artificial trees where burlap strips were wrapped around the trunk. Note that the base of the trunk is a larger than the top.

Our theatre recently produced a Gilligan's Island spoof and had the need to tie the castaways to palm trees. A couple cast members were tied up for a prolonged period so comfort was a concern. We used 4x4 posts padded with cotton batting then wrapped in burlap. We wound small twine in an criss-cross pattern over the burlap and applied brown/green paint with a brush to add dimension.
